Despite nearly two centuries of missionary efforts, less than 1.2% of the population identifies as Christian, and most believers are from ethnic minorities rather than the Thai majority. Theravada Buddhism is deeply intertwined with Thai cultural identity, making many feel that adopting Christianity is a betrayal of their family or heritage.
Of Thailand's 7,415 administrative sub-districts, over 6,000 have no church or Christian presence. A survey indicated that 89% of Thais who have heard the Gospel could not fully understand its message. Thai churches are generally small and often lack the strong spiritual leadership necessary to equip members as disciple-makers.
Yet creative outlets are opening new doors. In a culture seeking lasting peace, relational Gospel outreach is proving to have a significant impact — particularly among young people who are drawn to community and shared experiences.
